(23) To live in harmony with nature is one of the basic Buddhist doctrines and has been very strictly adhered to by all Buddhists. One of the Buddhist axioms says that “with our purified volition, the land we live in shall turn spontaneously into a purified territory”. In order to remove from our minds the attachment to selfishness and to rid them of the obsession with material gains and carnal desire so that they can be delivered from the fetters of the mundane life and win back their purified volition, we should try our best to eliminate the three basic evil afflictions which are <1> raga (greedy desire), <2> dvesa (anger), and moha (ignorance) from our disposition and intellectuality. On the other hand we need to foster in our minds compassion which must be such that it includes in its compass all races of human beings and all other species of forms of life on the earth. We should take into consideration the prosperity and happiness of offspring of all nations across the world in handling all the problems related to our ecological environment, so that survival of the human race on the earth can be ensured. By “a purified territory” is meant that efforts must be made to preserve integrity of the ecological system and to ensure that the ecological system can work well. For this, a soundly operative social structure needs to be set up and then well maintained. The most practical measure to take to bring about “a purified territory” is to live thriftily and economically so that mankind can long survive in peace, ease, and bliss.
