(16) The historiography adopted by some historians in composing historical works dealing exclusively with the history of Buddhism in China is not what I can try my best to refrain myself from publicly gainsaying, because their works deliberately focus on highlighting sectarianism in Chinese Buddhism. Such a historiography tends to obscure the true and overall evolution of Buddhism in China. The emergence or obscuration of a sect in the history of Chinese Buddhism remains eternally as a link in the long chain of development of Chinese Buddhism and has borne as much on the development of Chinese Buddhism as a whole to such an extent as befitted the historical significance of such an emergence or obscuration. The wax or wane of a Buddhist sect depends directly on its actual bearing on the overall development of Chinese Buddhism as a whole but has nothing to do the fluctuation of “internal strife” in Chinese Buddhism.
